How long will it take me to learn to dance?
This is the most frequently asked question new dancers have, but the most difficult
to answer. In order for us to give a meaningful answer, you should help us define
your first set of dancing goals. Are you getting ready for a one-time event? Perhaps
you are looking for a new hobby that you hope to enjoy for many years? If you are
getting ready for a dance at a wedding then you might want to prepare for about four
to twelve weeks before that event. If you are planning on becoming a well-rounded
dancer, then you should enjoy one to two years of lessons to develop your basic social
dancing skills.
Who is the best teacher for me?
Different teachers have different
strengths; some teachers enjoy the social part of dancing while others enjoy turning
your dance lesson into a workout. But either method could potentially be a good fit
for you. Please tell us about yourself and your expectations for your lessons so
that we can help match your personality. If you are looking for a leisurely lesson
that will help you de-stress after a long day at work, the teacher who will push you
hard ("one more time!""faster!") might not be the right fit. Then again,
if you're a goal-oriented, highly driven person looking for a dance trainer to get
you motivated, the amiable, easygoing teacher who will chat with you about your weekend
might not be the best fit.
What class do I take / How do I get started?
The answer will usually be take a private lesson if you can. You will learn the
fastest and you will make a friend. Privates will be the most flexible for your time
availabilities, skill, and learning aptitude. If you can only start with a group
class, then try a 4 week series class. It will help you meet some of the other
students as well as give us more time to get to know you. If all else fails then
come to a Friday night dance party class. This will be your shortest and quickest
introduction to the studio.
Where can I go dancing for fun?
The sky's the limit here, really. You can check out Harry Denton's Starlite Room
on the 21st floor of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Fransisco, or you can go
to Alberto's in Palo Alto for some Salsa. If you're looking for something a little
more local, hang with us at our social gatherings, including our Friday Night Parties.
If you really want to have some fun, dancing at weddings is a great way to practice
your dance skills.
Do I need a partner?
Of course you will need a partner at some point -- it's ballroom dancing! But we
are more than willing to provide you with a partner. If you purchase private lessons,
we generally match you with a teacher of the opposite gender so they can serve as
both an instructor and a dance partner. In group classes we strive for equal numbers
of leaders and followers, but due to chance sometimes there will be more of one than
the other. Therefore, we switch partners to ensure that everyone gets an equal
opportunity to dance with a partner.
How much does it cost to learn to dance?
This will vary depending on your personal situation. We're sure you are perfectly
fit, coordinated and musical already, so learning to dance will be quick, cheap and
just a snap for you! If you have friends who are not quite so fortunate, it may take
a little longer and cost a little more. But just remind them to make a dancing budget
so they can learn gradually in a comfortable way.
How can I save money?
We are always willing to help people with the cost of dancing on an individual basis.
Just let us know that you would like to dance more but need financial assistance. We
are happy to not only work out a payment program for lessons, but also possibly get
you involved in some of our promotional programs such as jewelry parties, being a
party host or refreshment host, or becoming a group class assistant.
